A faceless shadow that stalked a mysterious junglescape never seemed rooted in reality. I doubt a country has ever been through what the Vietnamese have endured. Yet the remarkable people of Vietnam have not only continued to rebuild after nearly 130 years of continuous occupation and conflict, but they warmly welcome visitors back to this intoxicating country. So when my wife and I discussed where we wanted to honeymoon, Vietnam had been a place we were both anxious to unravel, and do so by bike.</span></p>

We wanted to keep the element of surprise a key component during our 7 day, 700 kilometer odyssey through villages, tea fields and rice paddies. A rough distance of 100km a day leapfrogged us from one Provincial outpost to the next, allowing ourselves the luxury of finding lodging each night in lieu of camping, it was our honeymoon after all!</span></p>

We sourced a local tour operator in Hanoi for bike rentals and they conveniently delivered them to our hotel. The touring rigs featured a robust but lightweight aluminum frame, complete with a triple chainset up front and flat bar setup that would keep us comfortable and spinning easily for most of the weeks challenges. As a result, everything had to fit into a saddle pack and handlebar bag. Fortunately this gave us the weight savings needed for the 11,000 meters of elevation we were now facing. We also brought our own saddles, which is a crucial component when you are spending countless hours on the bike.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">Now we needed routes. To avoid as much congestion as possible, we hired a taxi to the town of Hoa Binh to escape the metro gravity of Hanoi. With heatmap help from Strava, a 15 year-old Lonely Planet book and a serendipitous meeting this past summer with a touring couple atop Alpe d’Huez (crazy, right?), we managed to cobble together our itinerary based off these routes.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">After 4 flights and 24 hours of travel, we slipped into Hanoi under the cover of night. The city asleep, now exhaling the day while shopkeepers began the nightly ritual of scrubbing their parcel of sidewalk from the furious hive of citizens, tourists and scooters that descend daily onto the streets. The next morning, we see this orchestra on full display. I’ve never seen a place that overflows with such noise, color, and energy. Acclimating your senses to the higher frequency of life here is necessary just to walk down the street. Though we were avoiding the most distilled elements of the Vietnamese metropolis while riding, these were consistent themes throughout our tour. The manic honking of buses, cars and scooters, even in the most rural villages, became the soundtrack of our week. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">With the pan flat Red River Delta behind us, we arrive in Hoa Binh. Nestled in the foothills of the Song Ma mountain range, our first day will also be our longest and most testing. 115 kilometers and 2400 meters of climbing stand between us and a place to eat and sleep. What we quickly discover by committing to lodging and not camping, is that no matter the circumstance, you need to get to the next village.</span></p>
</div></div></div><div  class="be-row be-wrap clearfix "><div  class="two-third column-block  no-background    " data-animation="" style="  "><div class="be-custom-column-inner"><p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">The late start to the day not helping matters, we quickly find ourselves racing the sun as we push west deeper into the countryside. 20 km from the next town, the last shards of light vanish over the mountains. Pulling over to the side of the road, we deploy lights and headlamps that I thought were packed out of precaution, but are now essentials. Mesmerized, we follow the sliver of white paint and the glow of the GPS screen, we are now wrapped by night. Exotic noises from just beyond the reach of the headlamps emanate from the bush around us. Exhausted, our imaginations run wild as our legs are fueled only by adrenaline. The mysterious junglescape I had romanticized came rushing back in a very real way. We make our way to Moc Chau around 9PM and find the first guesthouse available. The stress of Day 1 now behind us, we knew if we could get through a day like that, we could handle anything.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">Over the next few days, we experienced what can only be described as seismic hospitality. Each village and farmhouse we passed was met with a chorus of “Hellos!” from children and adults. Feeling obliged to respond to each, a twinge of guilt washed over when it was not practical. Exceptions included while eating, drinking, avoiding oncoming traffic, or fearfully trying to escape the off dog who also wanted to express his “hospitality”.</span></p>

The mundane task of swapping out an inner tube became the communal charge of 3 men who materialized from seemingly nowhere, along with a smattering of women and children looking on. Though we were thankful for their help, the quick fix became anything but. Thanking our new fanclub, we continued on our parade route of Vietnam. The genuine friendliness of everyone we encountered was overwhelming, motivating and powerful. The beauty of the landscape here pales in comparison to its people. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">We meandered through vast valleys of rice paddies that defied the contours of nature. Carefully sculpted irrigation channels and delicate tiers of earth reminiscent of a wedding cake in a Dr. Suess book. The ornate geometric swirlings of tea plantations in the high mountain passes are dazzling, leaving you to wonder if they are meant as art or agriculture. But the most amazing sight was that of the children tasked to wrangle water buffalo that dwarfed their masters. It wasn’t uncommon to even see the kids ride their lumbering cohorts down the mountain.</span></p>

This allowed us to enjoy not only the beautiful, but the bizarre. At the end of a sweltering Day 5, we looked forward to a hotel on the outskirts of a town called Muong Lay. We were uncertain about the existence however of the town itself, as I stumbled on a footnote that a dam could have been constructed, wiping out the town. That did not appear to happen fortunately, but what we found instead was a planned city grid that was utterly deserted except for a few hearty vendors.</span></p>

What was a chain hotel, was now owned, operated and home to a small family of 4. It appeared we were the only guests, which made the scene at dinner in the cavernous banquet hall both hilarious and unnerving. We were happy to continue on, despite the brief luxury of having our own private hotel.</span></p>
</div></div></div><div  class="be-row be-wrap clearfix "><div  class="one-half column-block  no-background    " data-animation="" style="  "><div class="be-custom-column-inner"><p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">Standing between us and our train to Hanoi, was the highest road in Vietnam, Tram Ton Pass. Approaching from the west, we began our 25km / 1,300m assault on the monster early in the day. We knew this would be an all day effort as we snaked our way across the ceiling of the country. Topping out at nearly 2,000 meters, the warm inland air collides with the damp moist weather systems coming from the east. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400; font-size: 14pt;">Typically the summit is shrouded in fog, but we lucked out and stopped to gaze across a skyline of limestone spires surrounding us. &nbsp;As the wind picked up and we caught our breath in the thinning air, we prepared for the chilly descent to Sapa for lunch. Coasting downhill for the remaining 50km into the border town of Lao Cai, we rehydrated with a few celebratory beers and boarded our overnight train back to the city.</span></p>

You can appreciate the effort involved in cultivating such a rugged terrain when your own legs need to push through it. Vietnam isn’t perfect, and we are still a long way from understanding the economic and social divides that weigh on the country, but in that mystery I think there is common ground. To experience the voices and smiles of its people are critical to begin putting a face and a name to them all. </span></p>

For the most part my riding has consisted of staring at a wall indoors. Partially due to the schizophrenic weather and lack of cycling pals, partially to my daytime job which entails working from home on weekends. I needed an adventure, a goal. I needed to be shaken and told, &#8220;You&#8217;re in France! Ride your bike!&#8221;</p>
<p class="p1">So I plotted a mid-week, 2 day escape on a clear October morning to Saint-Quentin, to find the storied pavé of Paris-Roubaix and the iconic cobbled bergs of Ronde van Vlaanderen.</p>

<p class="p1">Day 1 would meander north and west for 170 kilometers until I reached a small village on the outskirts of Oudenaard, Belgium. Hopping off the early morning train from Paris, I immediately hit a scenic canal path that escorted me outside the city limits of Saint-Quentin. Just 6km in, I quickly had a problem. The familiar hiss of a puncture revealed a sizable gash from a sharp stone. Applying a boot, I furiously pumped the inner tube to account for the extra weight of my saddlebag.</p>
<p class="p1">With added caution for the next 80km, I found a bike shop, grabbed a spare tire and some lunch. Filling my stomach with the same fervor as the inner tube with burgers and frites, as I heard a little extra weight is a good thing for the Hell of the North. I was about to find out.</p>
<p class="p1">The first sector was dedicated to The Badger, Bernard Hinault. After winning the 1981 edition in the rainbow bands, he said after “Paris-Roubaix is bullshit&#8221;, but in French, which probably sounded slightly less crass. I couldn&#8217;t believe what was ahead of me. Having only seen footage and photos, nothing prepares you for the deformed nature of these &#8220;roads&#8221;. Though fortunate it wasn&#8217;t raining, large stagnate puddles still filled the gutter of the sector, while a mud caked surface adorned the crown in the road, inviting you to try your luck.</p>
<p class="p1">Having told myself I was a student of riding pavé, this first sector quickly taught me I knew nothing. Instantly, my calipers jammed with the clay like mud of the French Ardennes. This was a reoccurring theme on every sector after as my 28c tires, which made the experience slightly more comfortable, certainly added to the clearance issue once the mud became an unwelcome stowaway.</p>
<p class="p1">The absolute violence of the ride cannot be over exaggerated. I tackled 4 sectors in total, amounting to less than a quarter of what the pros traverse, and at a pedestrian pace. No part of your bike or body remains unaffected. Picking a line to ride is even more difficult. You might see a more reasonable patch in the gutter across the road, by the time you decide to change tack, the mirage is gone and a smoother line appears on the side you just abandoned. It&#8217;s a head game. I felt like Charlie Brown, and Lucy kept pulling the ball from under me.</p>
<p class="p1">Approaching the Forest of Arenberg, I was covered in goosebumps. The only feeling I can compare, is going to my first baseball game as a kid. The tiny players on a field the size of an ocean was too much to process.</p>
<p class="p1">Between these unforgiving stones, small flowers and sprigs of grass peaked through the gaps. I was sure this place was haunted, bolstered by the knowledge that a maze of abandoned mines criss-crossed the terrain underneath. It was quiet now, locals having a stroll and walking dogs. But come the second Sunday in April, the thunderous masses and ghosts will return, the flowers will hide, and the pavé will write one more chapter.</p>
<p class="p1">A gentle tailwind most of the day was immensely appreciated. After rolling into Belgium, I savored the day with a local beer and refueled (again) with a pile of frites and burgers. Tomorrow, Flanders awaits.</p>

<p class="p1">Day 2, clocking in under 140 kilometers, certainly was the highlight of the journey. The picturesque countryside of western Flanders is littered with cobbled bergs that decide the Tour of Flanders every spring. Setting off at daybreak, the Oude Kwaremont, Paterberg, Koppenberg and Taaienberg were all within reach. Each of them carry a gravity that is both reverential and real. Pitching you 17,18,20 percent at times, my pedestrian pace made it seem inconceivable to race such an incline. My only goal was to not dismount, both as a source of pride and function. I knew that resuming would be nearly impossible on such vicious ramps.</p>
<p class="p1">Everything was going as planned, as I grinded away on my 34/28, weaving up the Koppenberg. At the base of the climb was a flurry of activity. A small village was being built to accommodate the annual Koppenbergcross race the coming week. Then it happened, 50 meters from the summit, a forklift wielding a shipping container was descending the narrow corridor. There was no choice but to dismount and marvel at the skill of the driver as he surgically piloted the vessel backwards down a 15 percent cobbled grade. I took the opportunity to appreciate the sunrise over the autumn landscape. Farmland that rolled off into the distance and over the next tuft of Earth.</p>
<p class="p1">Nearing the village of Geraardsbergen, the Muur awaited me. A climb that is etched into the Monuments as it stands as one itself. Attacking on this climb is often more memorable than the winner of the race. A gentle prelude of brick roads creates a sense of ease. A few left and rights through the heart of town reveal a wooded entrance to the unknown. Once on the secluded slopes, the bricks morph into unforgiving pavé. The bike rattles and chatters in ancient tongues while your legs are baptized in their own searing acid. The struggle of keeping your front wheel down on the 19 percent grade is real, as I feared the dream of my first wheelie would be my last.</p>
<p class="p1">Then as quickly as it began, the gradient eased as I swung to the right and there is was, the chapel on the Muur. A cathedral of cycling, and a jewel of Flanders. My first impression, was how small the whole setting was. The wide angle lenses, and dense crowds you see in photographs and TV make this area seem larger than life. Alone on a mid October afternoon, overcast clouds settling in for the season, it felt subdued, the way it must be for the other 364 days a year.</p>
<p class="p1">I worked my way south and west, back to the border of France. I found a riverside bike path for 40km, cutting my way through the northern Ardennes. Crossing back into France, the cycling infrastructure was noticeably different. Though not poor by any means, the Belgian roadways are impressive by any comparison. In France, drivers are respectful, but you do feel the need to watch yourself just that little bit more.</p>
<p class="p1">I felt good the whole day fueled by a mountain of frites the night before, I skipped lunch and reached Maubeuge ahead of schedule. Not in time to avoid the dreaded French blackout. Anyone who has ridden in France knows that looking for food after 3pm is a fool-hearty mission. I broke this cardinal rule and was left with only one option, you guessed it.</p>
<p class="p1">Regardless, train ticket in hand, I tucked into yet another head sized burger and replayed the last two days in my head. Moving to this part of the world and having access to these roads has given me a new appreciation for the bike. It&#8217;s easy to get stuck in the day to day routine of life, but sometimes you just need to be shaken up a little, or in this case, a lot.</p>

Aside from the occasional Czech brew&#8230; OK maybe more than occasional&#8230; and head banging to a certain song made popular by Queen, I felt no connection to what was once the power and cultural center of Europe. To make matters more embarrassing, somewhere in my own lineage sit genes from this part of the world.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Instead of getting trapped in a Wikipedia hole, I wanted to see this far off place which was now in my backyard. Maybe then I could begin to put history into a context.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Prague sits about 400km from Berlin with a profile so flat it allows you to cover the distance in 2 days. Trying to decide how to arrive though was another issue, as there are countless roads crisscrossing the countryside. Compromising a little bit of time with scenery, I was able to plot a course with a bit of everything. Evenly spaced villages every 5-10km connected forests, fields and river side paths.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Loading up for the 2 day haul was the usual assortment of tools and nutrition. Though I would encounter many villages along the way, the regularity of seeing a bike shop or convenience store is less than you think. Because the distance was so far, and the solo nature of the trip meant I couldn&#8217;t hide from the wind, I needed to limit my stops and keep pedaling. The limited daylight of March in Northern Europe means every photo taken or water stop made brings you closer to riding in the dark.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bikepacking this time of year means you have to expect the weather to change at any minute. For me, the best approach is to overdress a little. The idea being you can always remove layers. Shivering while in the saddle for 8-10 hours is fast track to not being able to ride the next day. With this in mind, staying dry was my second priority. Adding some lightweight road fenders to keep the shoes and bum a bit drier on damp roads is a welcome luxury. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Setting off early, I left Berlin and headed South to Brandenburg. The roads are well kept as you would expect from many German States, but there is also an extensive cycle path network which parallels nearly every road, some of which are in immaculate condition. Riding on the main road, even when there is a path, never seems to bother drivers. Common courtesy though dictates taking the cycle path when you can. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Day 1 was not only the longest, but windiest. The first 160km of the ride was pure grit. A 10-15kph wind constantly crossed or piled into me for hour after hour. The only respite was the occasional block from a patch of forest. Once I reached the Elbe River outside of Riesa, my fortunes changed as the river funneled the wind to my back for the remaining 50km into Dresden. With 6km remaining, I decided to take what I assumed would be a quiet route through a park. It was certainly quiet for a reason, as the road turned to golfball sized stones in sand for a 700 meter gravel grinder up 12 percent pitches. I could only laugh as my bike and legs screamed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meeting up with friends in Dresden, I was treated like a Prussian king to a pasta dinner and cold beer. I&#8217;m pretty sure that’s how all the pros end the day after burning 4,000 calories, right? It was also mentally recharging to have a chat. Sitting alone with nobody to talk to but yourself for 10 hours is meditative and peaceful, but even for an introvert like myself, I&#8217;m sure I babbled on more than my friends were expecting. Batteries recharged, my friend Paul joined me for the first couple hours the next day. Though the wind wasn&#8217;t as strong as we continued down the Elbe, it was a vacation to sit on his wheel after battling the breeze the day before.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Knowing the region like the back of his hand, Paul pointed out castles, bridges and most importantly, a coffee stop in Bad Schandau that hit the spot after a brisk spin down the river. Saying goodbye, I continued on deeper into the Bohemian Kingdom, which was now growing skywards around me as I drew closer to the Czech border. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The romantic beauty of it all quickly dissolved after I passed an owner and her 3 dogs. I cautiously kept an eye on the largest one who was off his leash. Now 50 meters away, I suddenly hear the owners faint voice in the distance shout something unintelligible. Turning my head, I see the largest dog barreling toward me. I picked up the pace and figured he was too far to catch me. Another look back and he halved the gap. Now I can see the dog seething, he&#8217;s determined. Trying to remain calm, I summon my inner Cavendish and burn every match in my legs. Acid building quickly, I again look behind me, he&#8217;s still gaining. An untimely headwind picks up and I&#8217;m in full TT mode, and I can now hear the snarling dragon tucked into my draft. For what felt like a lifetime, my heart ready to explode through my chest, I see the animal now on my left. With one final surge of energy, I summon the loudest roar my depleted lungs can muster and swerve slightly INTO his path. He then stopped, turned away and trotted back to his owner, more than a kilometer away by now. Not sure of his surrender, I pushed on for another 5 km, constantly expecting to hear the rapid approach of nails on pavement behind me. For the rest of the day, I made sure to give a nod of approval to every owner who had a leash on their dog. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tracing the Elbe southward, wildflowers and flocks of birds canvas the fields and skyline, it&#8217;s an endless succession of nature. As I wound my way up through the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, I finally found a few hills to make the shorter distance of the day another demanding test. The earlier effort of the day and hundreds of kilometers covered in 2 days, my legs filed their ignored complaints. Reaching the city limits and picking my way through the cobblestoned spiderweb of Prague, I was in awe of the shear amount of detail in the ornate facades. My energy restored by the mystical forces of curiosity, the next next I spent the afternoon exploring the cafes, squares and spires dotting the city in every direction. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">I didn&#8217;t expect to come away with any grand connection or conclusion to Prague or the history of the Bohemian Empire. But I think it has given me context in where there was previously none. Sometimes the most exotic places are the ones we already know about, but never dug deep enough. Prague is undoubtedly beautiful, but so are the hardworking people who rely on the Elbe and the oceans of fields on either side. Empires rise and fall, but the people and land remain the same. Now I can dive into that wiki-hole!</span></p>
